The Rexburg City Council is reviewing it’s dog ordinance at Wednesday’s meeting. At the request of a concerned citizen, they will be discussing whether the ordinance is too stiff against barking dogs. The ordinance has been in place since 2001, and it allows officers to fine dog owners 50 dollars for disturbing the peace if the dog barks excessively. One Rexburg resident told the city council that that’s too severe, and believes that home owners should have the right to have a barking dog alert them to intruders. We’ve all encountered a dog or two that barks too much, but where should the line be drawn? “I think if a dog barks consistently and constantly, I think that would be considered disturbing the peace. If a dog barks to alert you if someone is in your yard or approaching your home, that’s reasonable I would say,” said Rexburg City Council member Donna Benfield. That’s exactly what the city council will be discussing at Wednesday’s meeting, is the ordinance reasonable and if any changes need to be made. But this begs another question, what’s driving that dog to bark “too much?” “There’s always a reason why a dog is barking.
