I don’t personally have experience with these devices, but from what I’ve read, they are not very reliable. Not only do they not work well, but some might also say they are a cruel way to try to correct your dog.

Dogs will always bark, you can’t stop them completely. The best way to control them is to have them well-trained. Don’t go crazy when your dog is barking, because it will learn that barking gets attention and a reaction. Just ignore him. This helps to keep barking at a minimum. Sometimes simply paying attention to what the dog is barking at helps. Don’t have a large response, just get up, look at what the dog is barking at, and go back to what you were doing. The calmer you stay, the calmer your dog will stay. This gives the dog credit for whatever they’ve noticed, but doesn’t praise them for extended barking. They got your attention, job done. Also, since they are looking to you for guidance, they will see that you saw whatever the dog is concerned about and did not see any reason for further action, so things must be OK. Then the dog will feel comfortable and move on.
Take time to train your dog. When a dog is barking, correct him, but don’t go overboard. Then find something to distract him from the barking, and as soon as he stops, start praising him a great deal.
Some people also suggest that if you train your dog to "speak" (bark on command), it is easier to train the counter-command to stop barking.

    Good luck.

Please don’t ever consider using an electric collar on a dog…it’s barbaric and cruel….would you like it if you recieved a shock everytime you spoke and someone didn’t like it?

There are better ways to train dogs and it takes a little time and patience…..seek the advice of a person who is qualified to give it

I have rescued 18 dogs with major social problems. I have had excellent results with the no-bark sonic collars. The electric shock ( more like a static zap) collars are a bit overkill for barking, but are great for field training, as you can give your bird dog signals from more than 100 yards.

I have never used one of the ultrasonic bark collars, but I know several people who have tried them with their Labs.I think it will depend on the temperment of the dog,and what is causing the barking. One person said it worked great, the other two said it was a complete waste of money.

When I did some research on the different types of barking deterrents for an article, I found that ultrasonic devices were almost always rated lower than others for effectiveness.
Many of the dogs tested either became accustomed to the sound or the sound itself was not particularly annoying to start with.

The most effective barking deterrent I read about is a combination of a microphone and a mild electronic shock. It should only be placed on the dog whenever the owners are not home to correct him or her with commands. The shock is variable, but you only want to set it to the lowest effective setting, like 3 out of 10. The shock is delivered through metal studs in the collar.

The microphone unit is placed near the dog’s throat and set for a certain decibel level. If the microphone picks up anything louder, most likely a bark, then the system delivers a sharp snap. As long as the dog remains quiet, nothing happens.

Another device that seems effective uses a small can of an aerosol repellent and a microphone. The ingredients in the spray can are harmless to humans, but the smell is very offensive to dogs. Again, a microphone is attached near the dog’s throat and a sound level is set. Once the dog barks, a burst of spray is released NEAR his nostrils, not directly at them. The dogs hate the spray, so they soon make the association between barking and its release.

Never use a barking deterrent for more than eight hours, and don’t use it for anything other than unwanted barking. These devices are not substitutes for invisible fences or behavior modification.

Does it really matter in the scheme of things today…. It definitely works so feel free to use it.
live and let live. I actually had my dog’s vocal chords removed, true story.

Not on larger dogs. We tried it and the dog kept barking. We ended up giving him to our friends that lived on a ranch. When you have a barker or a hudini you are between a rock and a hard place. Sometimes the best thing to do is try to find the animal a home where barking or escape won’t be a problem.

I have a yorkie which we love. But he use to bark at everyone walking by our house. We came across this website, read the review and decided to give it a try. It took about 5 days to train our dog but he no longer barks.
